Weekly Micro-Farm Report

Chickens:

The chickens fence is mostly up now. All Wayne has to do is add a gate and it will be complete. In the meantime we have jimmy rigged a gate so they can get out and hunt and peck away. Our goal with the chickens is that they will be free range but first we have to fence the property. That is about 1500 feet of fence. So it may take us a while to get that done not to mention to save the money to complete the project. So for now they have a yard!

Our baby chickens are coming along nicely, however, as I previously mentioned my lack of forethought has created a problem they are too big for their current home and they stink! Their current home is a box in our extra bedroom. Well, they can now hop out! So tonight even though we are having our College girls over for dinner we will be construction a new box in the shed. For our baby chickens. These 8 little Rhode Island Reds should be laying eggs by July!

Growing our flock: We are trying to buy 4-5 more chickens a month. To grow our flock, our current Hen house can accommodate 32 birds but we hope to have around 100 by year end.

Garden:

We will be planting our organic basil. This is the first of our farm crops we will be selling. I've been growing basil for a couple of years and love to have it on hand! Once the basil is ready I'll let everyone know and I'll give away my recipe for Tomato Basil Soup with any purchase! Yummy!

We are getting ready to plant our family garden this week as we enter the next growing season. We are also trying to determine where to put the big garden so I can take over the small garden to exclusively grow our organic herbs.

Ducks:
The ducks are arriving April 29th, Oh my!

If you are interested in getting farm fresh eggs and being added to our monthly egg list or if you'd just like to order a dozen please comment on this post. I will be in town on Friday & Sunday! You can always come out here.
