Well, we are thinking about adding Blue Slate Turkeys to the farm. This would be a slow process of growing a flock of these beautiful birds. They will start fenced but then will roam free on the property once our fence goes up.We hope to raise and sell these birds for Thanksgiving Dinners.
We are also going to be receiving 3 chicks on Thursday from the Kinnard and the Williams (Patrick & Kelli) familes. They will start out in the house and then move to the new chicken nursery as soon as they are feathered in a few weeks!
Okay, we found out we are receiving Cauga ducks and White Pekins ducks. I don't think I had seen these black and green ducks before. We are still deciding if we are going to put these ducks in the front pond or not. We are worried about predators. As well as Phoenix chickens which are ornamental Japenese Chickens. We have not ordered our next batch of chicks from Ideal yet because I am a little concerned about have too many different age chicks together in the nursery. I am not sure when our Rhode Island Reds will be ready to move to the Hen House! I am however eagar to get some more Production Reds or Red/Black Sex Link (means you can tell what sex they are at birth) chicks. We are leaning toward the Sex link chicks because they are a smaller bird and will consume less food. Regardless We need more chicks in here by May!
Final additional animal is coming by way of Yonderway Farm, Rooster Hill is finally getting its rooster or two!
Last week we made our first farm order from http://www.eggcartons.com/. It arrived Tuesday Morning it was so exciting to see the misprinted egg cartons and to know, wow we really are doing this.
Next, week its off to the feed co-op(of which we are finally members) to stock up on food for next month!
A big part of being successful in this I think is time management, gas management etc... So we really are trying to buy enough feed for one month for all of the animals. So this month on the 25th while we are already in town for music & co-op we will purchase....
- Chicken Layer Feed 100#
- Turkey Starter 50#
- Duck Starter 50#
- chick feeder (since its unlikely Wayne will have time to construct one!)
- water can
- Nesting Materials for chicks, ducklings, turkeys, chickens 6cu feet. My Mini van is going to look like a low rider!
In the next post I can show you my homemade chicken feed scoops!
